Application procedure to the PhD
To enter the IDEA Ph.D applicants must have successfully completed the International Masters in Economic Analysis offered by the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (with an average grade of B and a B+ in the Master Thesis), or the Master Models and Methods of Quantitative Economics (QEM) of two years offered by the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, the University of Bielefeld, the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and the University of Venice (with an average grade of B and a B+ in the Master Thesis).
Applicants that hold an equivalent degree (bachelor degree plus two years’ master degree) will have to undergo an evaluation by an admission’s committee. We rarely admit students directly to our Ph.D. program, as we feel that interaction with IDEA professors during the courses in the Master is an essential part of the training towards a Ph.D in IDEA. However, we have made some exceptions when a student provides sufficient evidence that he/she has received sufficient training at a similar level than our Master. In order to be evaluated candidates will have to provide the following information/documents, that can either be handed in or sent by e-mail to idea@uab.es:
- Transcripts and diplomas of former studies (bachelor and master)
- Complete CV
- English knowledge certificate
- Letter of intentions
- Two recommendation letters
In addition, the students must pass three comprehensive exams (prelims) in Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and Quantitative Methods. Prelims are scheduled for July of each academic year.
