Autonomic Lunch June, 2009

The Autonomic Lunch took place this year in "Las Planas". Second year students used this opportunity to hand out awards to several professors for their inspiration and animation in and outside of the classroom. This year the student awards for professors were:

Best strike - Pedro Rey
for Pedro's exceptional goal, which sealed the humiliation that the IDEA students' football team had been undergoing for quite some time at the hands of the professors. Smart organization and full-hearted commitment are key for success, as the students had to learn.

Best sprint - Jordi Masso
for the sprint that exemplified how the professors would not be outrun despite the generational gap. If academic life is sometimes like an overlapping generations model, this teaches us that the “young” will need to significantly raise their effort to compete with the “old”.

Best graphical representation - Jordi Caballe
for Jordi Caballe's graphical skills, in particular his three-dimensional ribbon flying through the class-room representing a CAPM. A picture says more than a thousand words (or equations), and on top is a wonderfully effective device to maintain the alertness of students.

Best e-mail - Kiku Obiols

for Kiku's creativity-powered Christmas e-mail, in particular the well-chosen epithet "most significant other". Economists are story-tellers (Bob Lucas dixit), so it is just natural that a good story merits an award.

Best "special class" - Tim Kehoe
for inviting students several times to "special classes" at Catalan eateries, where studying macro was a real fun-experience. This is to remind us that in addition to fulfilling academic requirements it is crucial to take time off an have fun, especially when that involves the exploration of the local cuisine.

Tesina defense 2009

Following their master thesis defense, the outgoing second year students invited their advisers as well their committee members to dine and wine at Can Margerit, an archetypical Catalan tavern serving traditional food. In conformity with the relaxed and friendly atmosphere between IDEA’s students and professors, the evening was great fun and a perfect setting to wrap up and toast to two years of hard but rewarding work.
