Nicolás Porteiro (Nico) passed away on April 24th, 2012 in Sevilla.
Nico graduated from the UAB’s PhD program in 2002. He came to Barcelona from Vigo, where he was born in 1974 and where he pursued his undergraduate studies in Economics. Nico was a very bright, hard-working, and generous person, eager to share, to learn and to discuss. A brilliant student, he became an extraordinary researcher and teacher. His students at the Universidad Pablo de Olavide de Sevilla, which he joined in 2004 after a two-year post-doc at CORE, will miss him.
Nico’s research is deep and wide. It covers areas ranging from game theory to public economics, health economics, political economy, and fiscal decentralization. He published his work in leading academic journals such as the Journal of Health Economics, the Journal of Economic Theory, the Journal of the European Economic Association, the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, the European Economic Review, the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, the International Journal of Game Theory and Social Choice and Welfare.
A serious professional and an extraordinary person, Nico was a passionate human being. All of us who have had the privilege to know him and work with him will miss him deeply.
