  Overview

The International Doctorate in Economic Analysis (IDEA) is a program that dates back to 1991 and was originally inspired by our Economics postgraduate courses initiated in 1976. IDEA was founded on the basis of our conviction that in Spain we needed to provide channels to enable research in economics at the highest possible levels and today we are proud that international rankings have placed IDEA as one of the top doctoral programs in economics in Europe (IDEA was designated as group of excellence by the EC’s program in Human Capital and Mobility, and Training and Mobility of Researchers program).

The  program focusses on an international outlook, in terms of students and faculty, a broad range of subjects, national and international networking like the European Network for Training in Economic Research  ENTER, and a prestigious team of faculty actively involved in initiatives such as The Graduate School of Economics, founded on the ideal of relentless pursuit of higher education and research excellence which in 2011 received the Severo Ochoa Center of Excellence award.

The faculty is drawn from members of the Economics Department of the UAB and the Institute of Economic Analysis (CSIC) together creating one of the strongest research groups in economics in Europe. In addition, several internationally renowned researchers are invited on a regular basis as visiting faculty, based on their excellence as researchers, teachers, and tutors.

The program is structured along the lines of the Anglo-Saxon tradition: the first two years consist of course work and a master thesis leading to the degree of International Master in Economic Analysis followed by two or three years devoted to writing a doctoral dissertation.
